Thanks to John's terrific hacking skills we have breached the Great Firewall of China to bring you this posting. hopefully i haven't spoken too soon.
Anyway, your erstwhile adventurers hopped back on a Beijing bound express in Ulaanbaatar. The Gobi desert begins a couple of hours south. It is unbelievably beautiful. Next time we'll definitely have to spend some time here.
When crossing the border into China the tracks change gauge so the entire train had to be hoisted up and have the 'bogies' replaced. (wheels in lay parlance). See the videos for a glimpse of the five hour procedure.

Wow, those videos of the trains switching wheels / bogies are fascinating - have never considered different gauges in track before.
